"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?"
Today, January 15 2015, marks Dr. King's 86th birthday. As we celebrate his life and legacy, let's impress upon our children the importance of service and helping others. Let's make a commitment to help others and find a way to get involved. If you are unable to serve this weekend, plan on doing it sometime this month. Our children learn from our example.
"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."
Take a trip to the library or bookstore and read with your younger children about the man, his life and his legacy. Look up quotes with your older children and have them choose one that resonates with them. Take them to see the movie Selma or watch a movie/documentary about his life in the comfort of your home. If you're in the Washington DC area, plan a trip with your family to the MLK, Jr Memorial. It's a fascinating monument that has his towering figure peering out at the Potomac river.
"The time is always right to do what is right."
Doing any of these activities could begin the process of inspiring our children to lead lives of service. It is important that we keep Dr. King's legacy alive by sharing his dream. I know at times we become jaded by current events, however, we must never lose hope. When you become despondent just remember, Dr. King's words...and embrace your journey.
"We must accept finite disappoint, but we must never lose infinite hope."
