Planning tips for college bound seniors

Highschool senior year is very overwhelming and being the mother of a high school senior is bittersweet. I've been preparing for this year for a long time and yet, I feel unprepared. I didn't anticipate that it would arrive this quickly. Preparing your college bound senior for this journey is no easy task but it's better to plan the process than to increase your anxiety level by 'winging' it.

There's a great deal of anxiety associated with the college process for both parent and senior. Therefore, using the following tips will enable you to manage your stress level. I'm sure there are some 'over achiever' moms who have their planning calendars and are in great shape. But for those of you, like me, who are easing into the process, these tips are for you!

I found the article "8 Things High School Seniors Need to Do Now" by Lynn O'Shaughnessy very helpful.

  • Meet College Reps
  • Visit schools/attend College fairs
  • Get organized/calendar
  • Retake SAT or ACT
  • Get a fnancial aid pre-read
  • Write your college essay
  • Ask for recommendations
  • Whittle down school list and start applying
Click on the link above and get an overview of each tip.  There's still time to get your calendar and get organized. There's no perfect process, however, organization is key to a successful process. Your senior will thank you later. Good luck! Be motivated, be organized, be patient and embrace your journey.
